Two are worth knowing:
- Copyright here works on notice and notice, a system unique to Canada. A rights holder that spots an IP address in a file-sharing swarm sends a notice to the internet provider, and the provider is legally required to pass it on to whoever holds that connection. No court is involved and nothing is taken down; a letter simply arrives. It surprises people who expect the American approach.
- News on Meta's platforms has been switched off for Canadian users since August 2023, when the company chose that over paying publishers under the Online News Act. Nothing is blocked by the government; a company made a decision and applied it to a country.
Beyond that, the usual boundary holds. A VPN changes what is visible, not what is permitted.
